Kelly Clarkson Emphasizes the Use of Adjectives Besides ‘Pretty’ for Her Kids

I don’t mind her being pretty, I don’t mind people saying it, but I don’t want her to get boxed into that. I feel like sometimes that happens with girls. I always say ‘cool’ and ‘fun,’ and we use different adjectives," Clarkson said of her daughter.

Kelly Clarkson enjoys every single bit of motherhood, and wants to teach her kids the best lessons in order to raise them up to become the best humans they can be.

Part of that process for the singer, though, involves the compliments given to them and how to approach the vanity that could arise if they don’t understand the other important qualities of a person. Making sure her children use well-rounded descriptive words rather than just falling into the outward appearance adjectives, Clarkson constantly reminds her girls that character comes before beauty.

“Anytime our little girl — our 3-year-old — walks in, everybody’s like, ‘You’re so pretty!’ I don’t mind her being pretty, I don’t mind people saying it, but I don’t want her to get boxed into that. I feel like sometimes that happens with girls. I always say ‘cool’ and ‘fun,’ and we use different adjectives. I make a point to do that,” Clarkson said to People recently.

Don’t get her wrong—Clarkson still finds herself adoring the Disney princesses and their stories, but she also points out the fictional characters’ inner qualities to the same strength as their looks.

“I’m not one of those people that’s like, ‘I hate princesses,’” Clarkson admitted. “I think they’re awesome, I know all the songs. But I make a point to always say other adjectives. It’s not always like, ‘Oh, you look beautiful.’ It’s like, ‘Man, you’re so rad,’ ‘You’re stylish,’ ‘You’re cool,’ ‘You’re unique.’”

Currently, fans can support Clarkson as a coach on this season of The Voice. New episodes of the show air every Monday and Tuesday night at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
