Listen, we get get it. We know y’all love you some pumpkin spice lattes. At the first sign of changing leaves, Americans are now genetically programmed to order PSLs laced with nutmeg and cinnamon and enjoy a sugary jolt of energy coursing through their veins. While we won’t judge (much), there are still so many other fantastic caffeination options out there. Here are five new Nashville java joints you should definitely consider checking out. (With or without the the spice.)

Stay Golden

From the team that opened the popular Germantown coffeehouse Steadfast Coffee, comes a luxurious new beanery and restaurant in Berry Hill behind 100 Oaks. Stay Golden is a striking space with soaring ceilings and an upstairs mezzanine dining area where the kitchen staff actually cultivates produce for use in their creative menu. In addition to fantastic coffee drinks, the menu includes delicious healthy breakfast and lunch fare along with a list of cocktails, some made using their own coffee from the roastery in the back of the building. They take their food and drink very seriously at Stay Golden, but all they want for you to do is enjoy yourself–and the discounted specials during their “Golden Hour” Monday through Friday make that even easier!

Americano Coffee Lounge

Wedgewood-Houston is a hot neighborhood, but not as hot as the cuppas at the new Americano Coffee Lounge which is nestled among the restaurants, bars, breweries, distilleries and even a cidery that have turned the former decrepit industrial strip into a hip destination. The owners consciously chose to call their new venture a “lounge” instead of a coffee shop because they want patrons to feel comfortable lingering in the casual environs and laid-back vibe. You’re invited to sit a spell while you enjoy a classic coffee drink and a tight menu of pastries and sandwiches. They even offer discounts to college students looking for a place to chill while they cram for that big exam.

Retrograde Coffee

Opening an upscale coffee shop way up Dickerson Pike in East Nashville might seem like a brave move, and firing up your espresso machine for the first time during the peak of July’s summer heat might seem downright nuts, but the baristas at Retrograde are indeed the good kind of crazy. Seeking to act as a locale for the neighborhood to come together over a great cup, they serve hot and iced coffee drinks in a bright, airy and welcoming environment. (Including this sweet potato latte, their tasty alternative to PSL.) The neighborhood is lucky to have them.

Slow Hand Coffee + Bakeshop

When word spread that the original Slow Hand Coffee + Bakeshop was moving out of their building near Cummins Station, grown men wept in their lattes. It turns out that SoBro’s loss is East Nashville’s gain as the husband/wife team of Nick and Audra Guidry have taken their considerable talents to the east side, nestled in the same strip near Five Points as their impending full-service eatery Pelican & Pig. The fabulous baker boy and girl are serving up some of the best pastries and biscuit sandwiches in town along with specialty coffee drinks.

Humphreys Street Coffee Shop

Humphreys Street Coffee Shop is a business with a mission. Located in a traditionally disadvantaged neighborhood, they exist to create jobs and mentor local teenagers to realize their own worth through working as part of the enterprise. The business not only serves an exemplary cup of coffee from their own roastery, but they also return 100 percent of their profits to the community in the form of programs and scholarships that support the students that work there.
