Brett Young will be hitting the airwaves with a new single. Fans can turn up the radio dial to hear “Like I Loved You,” from his self-titled debut album, when it officially impacts country radio on July 17.

The track, penned by Young and Jesse Lee, talks about the heartaches that come with breaking up. He does not want his significant other to say they can still be friends or be okay with him seeing somebody new. The title comes from the end of the chorus: “I gotta be honest / If you really believe that’s the truth / You never loved me like I loved you.”

“We got into this conversation about when people break up with somebody else, we can’t figure out why they think it’s OK to say ‘I really hope that we can still be friends.’ As we started talking more and more about that, we realized we both got pretty fired up about it. So we thought we better write a song about that,” Young explained in a video on his YouTube channel.

“Like I Loved You” is one of the 11 tracks Young helped co-write on his debut album, which was an endeavor that came naturally to the singer.

“I wanted the first album to be a way for people to kind of get to know me and every time we would go to grab an outside song that we really liked because it was a great song, it just really didn’t sound like the other songs on the record,” Young told Sounds Like Nashville. “So it was less about wanting to write all the songs and more about the songs being another new, different way for people as they’re listening to get to know me.”

While Young might have suffered through a heartache similar to that of “Like I Loved You,” he’s had a lot to be happy about lately. Young recently celebrated the success of “In Case You Didn’t Know,” which became his second No. 1 and was certified platinum. The platinum accomplishment made Young the only country artist to reach RIAA platinum-certification for a song released this year.

“Like I Loved You” is the third single from Young’s self-titled debut album. He is spending his summer out on the road with Lady Antebellum on their You Look Good World Tour.
