Darius Rucker just has one of those smooth, reliable voices that can make any song sound memorable, and he shows off those clear vocals in the music video for his latest single, “If I Told You.”

Shot in complete black-and-white scenes, the video goes back and forth between performance shots of Rucker in the studio and a girl wandering the lonely streets of Los Angeles. Making light on the idea of unconditional love between one another, Rucker cuts throughout the ballad sounds of the track to let it be known he hopes his girl will always love him no matter what he says to her.

While Rucker previously admitted he was not a writer on the song, he still connected to its message with great desire to say that love is powerful beyond all means, even when one is honest and open about their past.

“I always tell people, the first time I heard [the Black Crowes’] ‘She Talks To Angels,’ those lyrics did something to me. I probably requested that song eight times at different bars in Columbia, S.C. before going home, putting on Bonnie Raitt’s Home Plate, and trying to write ‘She Talks To Angels’ for Bonnie Raitt. ‘Let Her Cry’ just poured out,” he said. “For me, ‘If I Told You,’ inspired me like ‘Angels’ as it’s not a song I wrote, but as a songwriter I would not change a line as it moves me to want to not only sing along but also as a songwriter it inspires a new perspective.”

“If I Told You” is Rucker’s first single off of his fifth album, which has yet to be named or given a release date. He was also recently a part of the “Forever Country” celebration, by starring alongside many of the country music’s hottest stars in the collaboration video to honor the 50th anniversary of the CMA Awards.
