Little Big Town turn back the clock in the video for their thought-provoking new single, “The Daughters,” exploring American gender roles through time and how they’ve changed.

Filmed inside a high-school gymnasium in Tennessee, the clip was directed by Dano Cerny and places a group of girls in different periods throughout history – beginning in the 1950s before visiting the ‘80s and finally present day. As it progresses, the girls are first made to practice their be-seen-but-not heard social etiquette, and then taught to behave as perky show things cheering for the school basketball team. But all along one girl craves a different world, and by the video’s end, it seems like she may finally see it emerge.

It’s all meant to bolster the empowering new song, which was written by the group’s Karen Fairchild with Sean McConnell and Ashley Ray. Recorded in patient, powerful beauty, Fairchild and her band mates told CMT the song is not meant to scorn the mistakes of the past – or to challenge anyone’s religious convictions. Instead, it’s a reminder of each person’s impact on the future.

“This song is about the laundry list of expectations and long-standing traditions put on women,” Fairchild said. “It’s about equality. It’s about hope for our children and what their view of the world will be. It’s not about a lack of believing in God or God’s love for girls.

“It’s incredibly important to me that my daughters know and believe that whatever they dream up is possible,” added the band’s Kimberly Schlapman. “I want them to feel empowered, supported, confident and free to achieve whatever their passions might be. This song represents all of that.”

“The Daughters” will likely appear on Little Big Town’s yet-to-be-announced ninth studio album. The group kicks off its 2019 summer tour schedule May 4th at the iHeartCountry Festival in Austin, Texas, and will visit fans from coast to coast through September 14th at the Hometown Rising festival in Louisville, Kentucky.
