Walker Hayes’ new single “Don’t Let Her” has given the world a glimpse of the beautiful relationship he and Laney share, through a till-death-do-us-part romantic love letter.

Recently, Hayes recalled the couple’s very first date and shared details that made it “very special.”

“We went to a monster truck show and then we went to a construction site after that, and realized someone had left the keys in a genie,” the singer told Sounds Like Nashville, and recently retold in a video series called Hayes of Our Lives. As Hayes described, the construction lift was “very high in the sky, so you can work on the roof or something and then comes down. It [was] like an accordion on wheels.”

Without much hesitation, the adventurous young couple jumped in with the keys in it, shot it up high in the sky, left it there and chatted for a long three to four hours.

“That was unique for me. You’re talking about a 17-year-old who, … I liked nothing but sports and just being a vandal, and I was sitting there with a girl. I don’t even know what we talked about but we just talked. And that’s what has carried us all these years.”

While there is an undeniable physical attraction that exists between them, Hayes shared that their relationship goes beyond that too. “There’s also this just, friendship, this bond, this comfort that I think we both feel in each other’s presence, and it’s why I love when she’s with me at some of these awkward Nashville gatherings. I love to have Laney because she immediately brings my heart rate to a very content, resting place and I open up and all [my] guards come down.”

And though the singer and his wife are older now, not much has changed. As Hayes revealed, “we still will sit on a couch and just shoot the breeze, like we’re two teenagers. Laugh and talk about people, you know what I mean? We just have such a great time talking.”

Hayes’ love for his wife carries into his new single, “Don’t Let Her.” The song is a letter to Laney’s future love, in the off-chance the couple doesn’t make it to old age together. Hayes leaves a list for the new man, giving him an inside look at the things that Laney loves and doesn’t, while also asking him that if she ever misses him, ‘please, don’t let her.’
