Brett Young has a lot to celebrate, with his most recent accolade becoming his fourth No.1 song. Topping the Billboard Country Airplay chart, “Mercy” is the California native’s fourth consecutive time hitting the peak position.

“We knew pretty early that ‘Mercy’ had to be a single because of the way the fans respond when I played it live,” said Young in a press release. “I wrote this song from a really vulnerable and honest place, so to see it go No. 1 is really special.”

The song came to Young towards the end of the album recording process. While working on his self-titled debut, the singer had 11 songs in the bag. When he learned he needed a twelfth, it was “Mercy” that made the cut.

“That song made the 11th hour. We got we were gonna stop with 11 songs and then we found out iTunes needed us to have 12 and I went, ‘Well, I know which one it’s gonna be,’” he recalled.

“Mercy” is the fourth single from Young’s debut record, following the No.1 hits “Sleep Without You,” “In Case You Didn’t Know” and “Like I Loved You.”
