Charles Kelley Revives Dick Fantastic Cover Band for Valentine’s Day Show
Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum revived his raunchy cover band, Dick Fantastic and the Fabulous Four Skins, for an unforgettable show.
It was a little bit rock, a little big raunchy and a whole lot of fun when Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood assumed their alter egos and took to the stage in 3rd & Lindsley for a performance many won’t soon forget.
Dubbed Dick Fantastic and the Fabulous Four Skins, the cover band formed nearly four years ago when their Lady A bandmate Hillary Scott gave birth to her first-born, Eisele. The men, seemingly needing something to do to pass the time, formed their group and played two shows in 2013.
Back with a bigger budget (hello, smoke and bubble machines!), Kelley, Haywood and their Lady A band hit the stage on Valentine’s Day to a sold-out crowd excited to see what would happen next. Each of the band members took on a new identity, including Girth Brooks, Jerks Gently, Queef Urban and Kenny G Spot, among others, with ridiculous wigs and matching Pepto-Bismol pink suits.
After a hilariously inappropriate introduction, the group hit the stage and kicked off their set with Toto’s “Africa.” The Dick Fantastic and the Fabulous Four Skins set list was an eclectic group of songs, keeping fans on their feet with “Maneater” by Daryl Hall & John Oates, “The Right Stuff” by New Kids on the Block (yes, complete with an attempt at the iconic dance) and “This Is How We Do It” by Joe Stone and Montell Jordan.
The show wasn’t all hype as Kelley threw in several slow songs, from George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” to Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.” The pinnacle moment, however, was when they performed Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” from Titanic. Kelley could hardly contain his laughter when Haywood broke out a flute for the tune, but was helped along by the captivated and enthralled audience. The entire venue of fans sang as loud as they could at the climax of the song for an unforgettable moment between audience and band.
The show closed when Haywood got his moment in the spotlight, as he busted out some serious rap skills when the group took on Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise.”
Fans wouldn’t let the night end there as chants of “We want Dick” rang throughout all of 3rd & Lindsley. The band quickly returned for their two final songs, Extreme’s “More Than Words” and Ginuwine’s “Pony.”
The nearly hour-and-a-half return of Dick Fantastic and the Fabulous Four Skins was an exciting and energetic show that highlighted the talents within the Lady Antebellum camp. Though not performing as the GRAMMY-winning trio, the show proved that they can do just about anything when it comes to a live performance. And one can only hope that Dick Fantastic returns for more shows, whether or not Scott is on maternity leave.
