Though primarily known as a Southern Rock pioneer, the music of Gregg Allman seemed to transcend many genres, and truth be told, the singer – who passed away on May 27 at the age of 69 from complications of Cancer – had many roots steeped in Country Music.

For starters, Allman was born in Music City. He drew his first breath in Nashville’s St. Thomas Hospital on December 8, 1947. He did spend the majority of his teenage years in Florida, relocating to Daytona Beach before setting the Macon music scene afire in the late 1960s. Though Allman never hit the Country charts during his career, his songs – such as the classic “Midnight Rider” definitely made an impact on the Country Music landscape. Here’s what a few of the format’s top stars had to say about his passing.
