On Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 8), the world learned that legendary country singer Glen Campbell had passed away after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. The news hit Nashville hard as many of the country artists residing within Music City were inspired and or influenced by the “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

While the news was still fresh, many lovers of music made their way to Bridgestone Arena to catch John Mayer’s The Search For Everything World Tour. The concert was filled with many of Mayer’s own songs, but the guitar aficionado took a moment to honor the late singer during the show.

“I’m going to play this song with more love than precision,” Mayer prefaced his performance of “Gentle On My Mind.” “I’m going to play it because it’s my favorite song in the world. It was performed by Glen Campbell, who sadly passed away today. Whether I play it right or wrong, I’d rather have played it.”

The moving track was originally written and recorded by John Hartford, but won Campbell two GRAMMYs in 1968 for Best Country & Western Solo Vocal Performance, Male and Best Country & Western Recording. The song earned a new life when The Band Perry recorded the song in 2014 for the soundtrack of the Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me documentary and earned the sibling trio a GRAMMY for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2015.

Campbell died at age 81 in Nashville, TN. He is survived by his wife, Kim, and their three children Cal, Shannon, and Ashley, and five children from previous relationships, Debby, Kelli, Travis, Kane and Dillon.
