Nashville. Music City. The Athens of the South. This Tennessee town may have built its reputation based on the simple stereotypes that tourists seek out on TV, but in our Nashville, we follow the trends while honoring the traditions that built this spot into the legacy it’s created. Each week, we focus on the latest gallivant around the streets we’ve come to call home for a new adventure and give readers an inside look on what makes this city special. Join us as we chronicle the hilarious and wild experiences with KB in the City.

With hustle and heart, anything is possible.

Those words stand as an inspirational mantra that radiates throughout the studio from the minute yogis step through the delicately-tiled entrance. In hopes to pursue sweat as Inner Light Yoga also encourages in all of their classes, I was welcomed in by the lighthearted spirits of Lee and Emmy Singer bright and early one Saturday morning. After greetings and instructions were accounted for, it became immediately clear that Inner Light embodied a space of peace and escape for every guest who finds their heart on the mat.

Although Inner Light Yoga focuses on a vinyasa-style practice, they flow through the motions alongside the rhythm of music. Blasting beats of anything from Coldplay to Florence and the Machine to Katy Perry, the practice releases tension through one massive stretch dance party.

Burning all the stress and calories away? Yes, please!

Every class provides its own theme of the day—during the visit, it just so happened that the morning dedicated itself to girl power tracks to liberate the group from any insecurities. With Emmy taking the lead, she made absolutely sure everyone in the room rid of their insecurities by hopping and bouncing around to the heavy club sounds of pop divas after finding zen in each position.

Getting down to the actual business, Inner Light conducts their classes just like many other studios around town by going through the motions of an assortment of poses. Allowing yogis to express their individuality is what Inner Light’s mission stands for, though, so constraints on following every direction aren’t even a thing when reaching that divine peace within the yoga practice.

While sweat and strength are definitely established within a 60-minute class period, the early morning weekend course flooded the studio with brightness to carry into the rest of the day. That attitude reflected the leadership, as well as the other yogis on mats, from flow to flow.

Through the downward dogs to the release of breath, Inner Light Yoga acts as somewhat of a therapy session with physical elements thrown in. There may not have been in-depth discussions or notes being taken, but the sense of calmness from striving to reach the fullest potential in each position made for a vulnerable yet safe place for everyone to let go.

Approaching vinyasa to the beat of their own drum, Inner Light Yoga resembles Nashville by bringing community together by way of music. Whether the playlist fills the room with Bruno Mars or Kelly Clarkson, the mission is no different—it’s all about breathing in the self-confidence and breathing out all negativity surrounding you.

Inner Light Yoga is located just off of the popular 12 South neighborhood in Nashville, right on 10th Avenue S. Classes are offered seven days a week, with most early morning flows beginning at 6 a.m. and running throughout the early evening. Each class comes complete with its own music theme and rhythm to accommodate all levels of yogis. The one class rate is $20, and Inner Light offers a variety of memberships and payment plans.
