Keith Urban brought a dose of nostalgia to the 2019 CMT Awards with his current single “We Were.”

As always, Urban delivered a unique performance, creating an intimate stage on the floor of the arena that brought fans in close and had him surrounded by several spotlights. Letting the humble nature of the song take center stage, the beloved star sounded serene as he sang “at least there’s a little bit of sweet in the bitter, though a part of me is always gonna miss her, I am who I am, I just miss who I was when we were” as fans held up their phones to document the moment. “So good brother,” Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook praised after Urban’s performance.

“We Were” is co-penned by Eric Church, a fact Urban didn’t know when he recorded the track. “When I first heard ‘We Were,’ I not only heard it, but I saw it. It made me feel something. The imagery is so strong – a stamp on the back of a hand, a Saturday night cover band, the girlfriend (or boyfriend) we ran with, and a fake ID (which of course I never had). So many of us can relate or will likely relate at some point!” he describes of the song.

Urban walked away a winner at the 2019 CMT Awards as he and Julia Michaels were awarded Collaborative Video of the Year for “Coming Home.”
