Luke Bryan Scores 22nd No.1 With ‘What Makes You Country’ Ahead of ‘Idol’ Premiere

The hits keep on coming for Luke Bryan as the as the superstar entertainer has earned his 22nd chart-topping smash with “What Makes You Country.” Taking the top spot on the Mediabase Country Singles chart this week, the song becomes the fourth consecutive No.1 single from his 2017 What Makes You Country album.

“We reminisced our childhoods and how we were raised when we got together to write this one,” shared Bryan of the song he penned with Dallas Davidson and Ashley Gorley. “A small town upbringing learning work ethic, manners, how to hunt and fish. Just living and enjoying life. I’m proud to be country and that I’ve been able to follow all my dreams and still remain true to who I am.”

News of his latest success comes just days ahead of the season premiere of American Idol on ABC. In honor of the search for new amazing talent, Bryan, along with his costars Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, visited Good Morning America early on Wednesday (2/27). During a chat with GMA’s Robin Roberts, Bryan praised the tenacity of some of the contestants, several of which auditioned last year.

“That’s the best way to compliment the show and us and what we’re trying to do,” said Bryan of the growth from those returning performers. “We’ve had a couple of kids come back and they took our criticisms… We don’t know what they did. What’s really rewarding is they see it too. You know, we were telling them things and we see them processing it… they still think they got this whole thing figured out, so when they can take some of our advice, apply it, come back….it’s just so fun to watch them grow.”
