Remember When Miranda Lambert Sang an Original Song on ‘Nashville Star?’

A lot has changed since Miranda Lambert made her debut on the first season of Nashville Star 14 years ago, but the one thing that remains the same is her ability to bring goosebumps to an audience with her vulnerable songs and second-to-none talent.

The singing competition show was exclusive for country music and premiered on the USA Network in 2003. Over 800 performers auditioned before judges narrowed it down to the top 12. In the fifth episode of the season, Lambert was spotlighted before her performance with an interview that took place in her hometown of Lindale, Texas with her family. In the clip, she admits she hasn’t gone through a lot of hard times and heartbreak in her life, but has seen it due to her parents’ careers as private investigators.

“They have so many stories of broken relationships and heartache and I’ve heard it my whole life,” a young Lambert states. “So I understand how people feel.”

This exposure led her to write “Greyhound Bound for Nowhere,” with her father. The track tells the tale of a woman having an affair with a married man and the struggle that comes with it.

“It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written because my dad and I wrote it together,” she revealed.

Back on the Nashville Star stage, Lambert belted out her song of heartache for the original songs-themed episode. Her performance brought fans to their feet as she sang the final note.

When the season concluded, Lambert found herself coming in third place. She may not have taken home the trophy, but her stint on the show led to a wildly successful country music career.

“Greyhound Bound for Nowhere” later landed on Lambert’s debut album, Kerosene, which was released in 2005.
