Nashville Mayor Megan Barry and her husband Bruce are mourning the loss of their son Max after an apparent overdose in Denver, CO on Saturday, July 29. The couple released a statement about the passing of their only son hours later.

“Early this morning, we received news that no parents should ever have to hear. Our son Max suffered from an overdose and passed away,” the statement read. “We cannot begin to describe the pain and heartbreak that comes with losing our only child. Our son was a kind soul full of life and love for his family and friends. Our family would greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers, and would respectfully ask for privacy as we mourn the loss of our child and begin to understand a world without his laughter and love in our lives.”

As news of the passing began to spread, several country stars extended their condolences to the Mayor and her family. “Haven’t stopped praying for Mayor Megan Barry and her family since I saw the news this morning. Praying for peace and comfort,” Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott tweeted, with Chris Janson echoing her sentiment.

According to the Nashville government website, Max, 22, graduated in June from the University of Puget Sound. He grew up in Nashville, having attended Eakin Elementary School, West End Middle School, and MLK High School before graduating from University School of Nashville.

A visitation for Max will be held at the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts at the Blair School of Music, 2400 Blakemore Ave, from 5 to 8PM on Monday, July 31. A memorial will be held at the Belcourt Theatre, 2102 Belcourt Ave, starting at 10AM on Tuesday, August 1 with doors opening at 8:30AM. For those wishing to make a contribution in his memory, the family suggests the Oasis Center or the Nashville Humane Association.
