Thomas Rhett’s ‘Marry Me’ Takes Unexpected Twist

Thomas Rhett is wedding ready, but it’s not his happily ever after he’s dressed for in “Marry Me,” his latest release to country radio.
The emotional ballad tells the story from Rhett’s point of view as the onlooker of the special occasion, wishing he was the one at the front of the aisle tying the knot to the girl of his dreams. Although the track’s piano-heavy sound tricks listeners into thinking “Marry Me” is a romantic love song, it actually plays out quite the opposite with Rhett losing his special someone for not speaking up about his feelings.
With brief mentions of heartbreak in lyrics like, “And I know her daddy’s been dreading this day / Oh, but he don’t know he ain’t the only one giving her away,” the country singer misses his shot at making his true love his wife while he watches on during the ceremony. Rhett saw a bit of himself in the character while writing the track, making it an even more poignant recording for his life.
“‘Marry Me’ is one of my favorite tracks on the record,” said Rhett in a press release. “It’s my big ‘what if’ song. I wrote it from the perspective of if I had never told my wife how I felt about her all those years ago. I probably would have been sitting at her wedding watching her marry someone else. Heartbreaking thought and thankfully I DID tell her how I felt- but it makes for a great song concept that so many people can relate to.”
“Marry Me” is featured on Rhett’s album, Life Changes, and follows singles like “Craving You,” his duet with Maren Morris, and the reminiscent “Unforgettable.”
Rhett will take his talents to Texas for the Thanksgiving holiday to perform at the iconic Dallas Cowboys halftime show on Thursday, November 23, at 4:30 p.m. EST on CBS.
