The Top 14 of ‘American Idol’ Perform Live on Television

Week after week, the competition on the latest season of American Idol keeps stirring up all the drama and the talent.

With the Top 14 locked in for the next round of performances, tensions reached an all-time high for each of the contestants trying to fight for their position in moving on toward the title of becoming the next ‘American Idol.’ The variety of songs left viewers guessing at what their favorites would do this week, and the cast did not disappoint.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson brought his deep voice to folksy sounds of “Midnight Train to Memphis” by The Steeldrivers. Busting out a little bit of banjo picking to get the party started, Hutchinson revved through his notes and amped up the crowd to the highest level. Although he sounded a tad shaky in his delivery, the contestant finished strong with his confident energy.

Although the judges noticed his nerves and mentioned how big the song was for Hutchinson, Katy Perry still boosted him up by noting that his performance sounded as though he believed in himself, and that’s what counts.

Gabby Barrett took a note out of Miley Cyrus’ playbook by singing “The Climb,” and she jumped on the chance to inspire with the empowering pop-country ballad. As the crowd waved their arms back and forth in the air, Barrett drives the song to all its glory with a raspy twang in her strong notes.

The panel seemed quite impressed with her range, with Luke Bryan even telling Barrett that her performance was his “favorite vocal situation of the night.” Perry seconded that same notion by joking that Barrett came out of the “star wash” and came out on top after learning the ways to make it big.

The results will come in from America’s vote on Monday night, determining which singers will move on to the next week of the competition.

American Idol airs new episodes on Sunday and Monday nights at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
